BRUIS in Bladel

Development

On May 24, 2025, BRUIS, the new community center of Bladel, was officially opened—marking the successful completion of an intensive development process. The project was initiated by the municipality of Bladel, driven by the desire to breathe new life into the outdated community center Den Herd. After extensive exploration and research, the decision was made to relocate to a new, sustainable site: the former Rabobank building at Markt in Bladel.

This location, purchased by the municipality, not only provided the necessary space but also offered an opportunity to fulfill circular and sustainable ambitions. Wherever possible, materials were reused, and the building was completely stripped and rebuilt to meet contemporary standards.

Stevens Van Dijck acted as project manager and represented the municipality during both the construction preparation and execution phases. In close collaboration with architectural firm Group A, engineering consultancy ABT, and the board of Den Herd, a well-considered design was developed from 2021 onward—focused on functionality, atmosphere, and long-term sustainability.

Building function

The former bank building has been transformed into a vibrant and multifunctional meeting place: BRUIS. Here, culture, education, relaxation, and social interaction come together. The building houses a large theater hall, several flat-floor performance spaces, club rooms, workshop areas, and the library. This makes it suitable for both small-scale activities and large events such as carnival celebrations or public tributes.

A key element in the design is the clear, open structure. Strategically placed atriums and staircases create visual connections between different floors and functions, allowing ample daylight and easy orientation. The building is designed to be used flexibly by various associations and user groups, while still maintaining a sense of unity during shared events.

Details

One of the most striking elements of the design is the so-called ‘connector’: a public route through the building that links inside and outside, old and new, upper and lower levels. This open space encourages encounters, social safety, and interaction between visitors and users. The new transparent façade on the market side reinforces this sense of connection and makes the activities inside visible to passersby.

The technical execution came with its challenges. For instance, the existing inner cavity wall—originally intended to remain exposed—turned out to be insufficiently smooth for the desired result. In such cases, guided by Stevens Van Dijck, practical solutions were sought together with the architect, aiming to strike a balance between appearance, budget, and feasibility.

BRUIS is therefore more than just a building—it is the outcome of an intensive and inspiring process, a place ready to buzz with energy, ideas, and connection.
