Development

The project comprises the design and construction of a new shared facility for the Central Sterilization Department (CSA) and the Central Endoscope Disinfection Department (CSD) on the Radboudumc campus in Nijmegen. In the initial phase, all processes were mapped out together with the users and other chain partners, such as the Operating Room department and logistics, and the functional and technical programme of requirements was established. During the design phase, the procurement of the medical equipment took place at an early stage to ensure that the technical specifications of the equipment could be fully integrated into the design. The new building was tendered as a single contract and constructed within a 24‑month period, including the validation of both the building and the equipment.

Building function

The new facility provides the architectural and technical installations necessary to carry out and safeguard the entire process of cleaning, inspecting, assembling, packaging, sterilising, releasing, and storing reusable medical instruments in an effective and responsible manner. For these processes, the rooms must meet strict air‑quality requirements (ISO Class 7), and a pressure hierarchy (-7.5 Pa ↔ +15 Pa) is applied to ensure proper separation between dirty and clean zones.

Details

The project site is centrally located on the Radboudumc campus. The new building connects at level -1 to the existing logistical tunnels and above ground to the adjacent high-rise structure. On the roof of the new department, a new entrance and a rooftop garden have been created simultaneously. Long skylights and a recessed patio allow abundant daylight to enter, resulting in a pleasant working environment. Combined with the integration of the most innovative technologies for automating and robotizing the logistics process of cleaning medical instruments, a modern working environment has been created with strong focus on the sustainable employability of staff.
