OR complex Nij Smellinghe Drachten

Development

Nij Smellinghe Hospital in Drachten continues to evolve. After successfully delivering a temporary pharmacy, a new outpatient clinic, and the Women/Children ward, construction moved on to no fewer than seven brand-new operating rooms, including one state-of-the-art hybrid OR.

Stevens Van Dijck organized and managed the tender process to select the right construction team partners, contracting the building contractor and E & W installation specialists. During the construction team phase, Stevens Van Dijck acted as project manager, overseeing the development from preliminary design (VO) to final design (DO), technical design (TO), and execution design (UO). In addition, Stevens Van Dijck fulfilled the role of site supervisor.

The project was carried out in multiple phases: the existing operating rooms remained in use while the new ones were being built. Once these were completed, the next stage of the project began: creating the holding area, recovery, and sterile storage within the existing OR complex.

In addition to efficient phasing, the use of state-of-the-art technologies, and safely navigating the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic, great emphasis was also placed on circularity and sustainability. By meticulously tracking all materials removed from the existing building and those used in the new construction, no material is lost now or in the future. All applied materials are stored in the material passport ‘Madaster’ for future reference. Everything that can be reused is incorporated into the new and improved Nij Smellinghe. When harvesting materials, it is assessed whether they can be reused within the project, in a future project at Nij Smellinghe, offered for reuse by third parties, or disposed of and recycled for another application.
